This is Halloween.

It’s no secret that Halloween is a big deal in the US, with spending estimated to reach a record $9.1 billion this year. However, it is the UK market that has seen exponential growth over the last 20 years and shows no sign of slowing down. Spending on Halloween goodies in the UK is set to reach an astounding £320 million this year, compared to just £12 million in 2001 .

As 46% of UK consumers spent money on Halloween in 2016, it’s clear to see that the occasion is no longer reserved for children. Though sweets and confectionary for “trick or treating” are still the number one best-seller over the festive period, sales of pumpkins, costumes, decorations and spooky cosmetics are on the rise. Spend on services such as taxis and events is also on the up, as Emma Angel – Director of Angels Fancy Dress , the UK’s largest costume hire company – explains:

“When I was small people used to have firework parties in the back garden. Now they are more likely to go to a display. But everyone can get involved in Halloween whether you are five, 20 or 80.”

Evidently, Halloween is no longer something reserved for our cousins across the pond and affects UK businesses in all industries. It’s particularly important for small businesses to prepare their infrastructure to ensure they can continue to operate smoothly across the festive season, from now until the New Year. This could be in the form of taking on more staff in your brick-and-mortar store, offering an  experience-driven event to boost Halloween sales or strengthening your eccomerce store to cope with the increase in orders. Our future-proof POS & Ecommerce Solution is built on market-trusted technologies, giving you the peace of mind you need to focus on what matters most.
